The Fantastic Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs

Readings of some of the greatest imaginative fiction ever written. Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known for his creation of Tarzan of the Apes, was a prolific author of what would come to be known as "science fiction" or "swords and sorcery." Accomplished film and TV actor David Stifel is your narrator and host. Join us for the adventures of a lifetime!

Breaking news - Tarzan is NOT censored here!

Late breaking news - we take special pride that we are presenting you with the unexpurgated and unabridged 1914 McClurg first editon text of Tarzan of the Apes!

In 1969, Ballantine Books was authorized by the Burroughs estate to issue a censored version of Tarzan, so as not offend any civil rights era mentalities. This bowdlerized text has permeated the information space such that any printed texts of this work you may get today are very likely to be the censored version (this includes the bowdlerized text available at project Gutenberg!).

We are especially proud to offer this work as Edgar Rice Burroughs himself wanted it presented to the world. 100% what ERB wished. This is the real thing!

Tarzan's Here!

It's time to focus on that iconic figure, Tarzan of the Apes. We've started with Tarzan of the Apes - and there are seven more Tarzan novels in the public domain.  Tell your friends.

As always, credit is due Ernest Stifel for his remarkable artwork for this podcast's icons. Thanks, bro!

This is the mega-blockbuster of the 20th Century. Really!  Tarzan was a huge success for Ed, and an icon of the 20th century. Written in 1911/1912 and first published in 1912 by All-Story magazine, Tarzan was every much as big a hit as Harry Potter has been in our own time.  We take great pleasure in presenting it to you - and hopefully to a new audience for this timeless classic.

Thuvia retires on July 16, 2012

On July 16, 2012, Thuvia Maid of Mars will be retired from this site. After that, listeners may listen to the first two episodes here free of charge, but will need to purchase it to hear the remainder. It may be purchased at www.burroughsguy.com.

This action is being taken to help generate revenues to allow me to continue podcasting more of these novels.

Many thanks to each one of you for your support.

Prolog and Chapter I – “Lost on Pellucidar”

The second of Ed’s Inner World series, written in 1914-1915, Pellucidar takes up the dangling plot line left at the end of At the Earth’s Core. Ed’s twentieth novel since his first in 1911 (A Princess of Mars), it demonstrates the author’s incredible capacity for work, and an amazing ability to juggle, by this time, three different book series (Barsoom and Tarzan as well as Pellucidar).

Up Next - Pellucidar!

Coming up immediately following the end of At the Earth's Core (very soon!) will be the next novel in the series - Pellucidar!  (Couldn't leave you hanging at the edge of a cliff, now could we?)

Watch for an announcement of what follows this book - the votes are in and I'm very excited about the next series to appear here at the Fantastic Worlds!

As always - many thanks to brother Ernest Stifel for the wonderful icon artwork that helps make the Fantastic Worlds even more fantastic!

Prologue and Chapter I – “Toward the Eternal Fires”

This is the third of Ed’s incredible series that he invented in that incredible burst of creativity between 1911 and 1913 – the burst that started in 1911 with the first book of the Mars series. It was followed by Tarzan of the Apes in 1912. Not satisfied, Ed went and created yet another long-lasting series in 1913 with his invention of the “Inner World” – the world inside the Earth – At the Earth’s Core.

Prelude – “John Carter Comes to Earth” and Chapter 1 – “Tara in a Tantrum”

The Chessmen of Mars was written in 1921 , 90 years ago. It was Ed’s 39th book, after his first effort in 1911, A Princess of Mars. 39 books in 10 years – and Ed was barely getting started!
